The most important books and stories I’ve read, the ones that have most shaped my life and my mind, have been science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. I still remember vividly the day I first stumbled onto a collection of Borges’ short stories in the Salem (OR) public library. I sat and read while listening to the rain pound on the roof, and as I devoured those stories, my life changed.
I will write a story biweekly—twenty six a year—in the tradition of great writers like Jorge Luis Borges, Octavia Butler, and Ted Chiang. They will rarely exceed five thousand words, and will sometimes be much shorter. Length is not quality!
On the “off” weeks when I do not publish a short story in this space, I will send reviews, recommendations, essays, or other writing (from myself or authors I admire), all on the general theme of science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction.
Other than one email a week—which will arrive Sunday mornings—you will not hear from me. And of course, I will not sell this email list to anyone for any purpose. My dream is to have readers who wake up on Sunday looking forward to hearing from me, and that relationship starts with my respect for your time and attention.
I really can’t wait to get started writing for you and sharing my passion for these genres. Please join me:
