I know I post about A.I. a lot, but honestly, every single week I could post about A.I. and I wouldn’t remotely run out of things to post or new developments to cover. We are living in an amazing time. Here are a few of the most compelling nuggets—some A.I.-related and some not—that I’ve encountered recently:
POE is a benchmark for A.I. usability, a phone app that allows you text access to a number of different Large-Language Models (chatbots) based on GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Basically, they have “tuned” the basic language model in different ways, and you can switch back and forth between them. The founder calls it The web browser for A.I., which has resonance. Example: One chatbot specializes in giving long, detailed answers to factual questions, another specializes in pithiness and brevity. This aspect is still in its infancy, and you can imagine this going to a much more nuanced and detailed place: A chatbot that responds to prompts with jokes or Shakespeare quotes, or a chatbot that responds from a politically-conservative point of view. My current favorite is “Claude+”. For any factual or intellectual question that I’m looking for clarity and erudition on, it blows google out of the water. And remember, this is as bad as this technology will ever be… new miracles every week.
Harry Potter characters if they were in a Wes Anderson movie, generated by A.I. This is my favorite:
This Dumbledore goes *hard*.
If you’re into really nerdy and long philosophy papers, "The Matrix as Metaphysics" was a lot of fun and pretty mind-blowing. It’s not really summarizable, so just take the time for a deep dive if the title sounds intriguing.
A woman used an A.I. voice-cloning program and other A.I.-tools to impersonate herself for 24-hours, and it fooled everyone in her life including her bank. File this under “we are not ready for what’s coming”. Again, remember, this is as bad as these technologies are ever going to get.
This is not sci fi per se, but I found it fascinating and it really would improve society if we all respected this reality a bit more. Basically, we all mean different things when we use very common words and almost nothing in the human experience or conceptual framework operates by consensus. Explains politics, among other things.
Hope you found something useful in the above! Have a great week, and I will be back next Sunday with another original story. In the meantime, you can as always help me out by liking, commenting, and sharing this post with others. Thanks!
yikes/24 hours!!
