OGWiseman Rounds Up!
Last week's story, reposted, and several sci fi selections for you to consider...
Hello! First off, as I mentioned in my previous edition, last week’s story was the second part to the first story I ever wrote for this project. I suggested that people who didn’t want to commit to two stories in one day (but needed a reread/first read of the first story) could read the first one that day, and I’d include a link in this email to the second story so you could read it today. So here it is:
And in case someone didn’t read either yet, but wants to catch up, here’s a link to the first part:
And now…
Welcome to the interstitial edition of OGWiseman’s Stories! In this week’s missive, I will be recommending four different sci fi objects for your delectation, in four different mediums.
1) A good friend of mine is creating an independent graphic novel that looks REALLY cool. The art is gorgeous, and his writing is always fun. I think it’s going to be great, and I’ve already supported the campaign. Here’s the link:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/765828218/the-anybodies?ref=project_build
Now my friend is a pro, and this campaign is really just a presale—a “donation” gets you a copy of the finished product in March. But the presales help the creators hugely, they deserve it, and it’s going to be a great book, so if you like comics, go check it out!
2) When I was in high school, if you’d told me “Ridley Scott-directed epic period piece starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and a bunch of other luminaries”, I’d have crapped my pants and predicted it would be the biggest thing ever, and that it would literally dominate the entire movie and media landscape for a season if not a year. (Note that this happened. It was called “Gladiator”.)
Now, we’re getting “The Last Duel”, and the buzz seems… muted? It’s so bizarre to me. Truly a sign of how much less cache movies have in our culture than they used to, of the cratering importance of box office as compared to other revenue streams, and of how the remaining movie audience is focused on franchise films at the expense of original material made with passion rather than algorithms.
So, as crazy as it seems to say this, please consider supporting “The Last Duel” because we need more movies like it! I want to write one! It releases in theaters (They’re safe if you’re vaccinated!) on October 15, and then onto various streaming and VOD platforms at the end of November.
I, for one, will probably have already seen it by the time this reaches your inboxes. This will be my first time back in a theater since early 2020 and I couldn’t be more excited, for the experience AND for the film!
3) Escape Pod is one of my favorite podcasts. They do original sci fi readings, and they have a huge backlog. Check it out at:
https://escapepod.org/
And watch this space for audio versions of my stories in a similar format starting in 2022!
4) “Foundation”, by Isaac Asimov, the most seminal and influential Sci Fi book series ever written, has been made into a TV show by Apple! Crazy to think, but it’s kind of flown under the radar, so for anyone who remembers that series or who just loves super-epic sci fi, go check it out!
Have a great week, and I’ll be back next week with another original story.
